Google Doodle by Makenzie Melton (winner 2010)

A Google “doodle” is the decoration Google makes to their logo every so often. Over the years doodles have become one of the most beloved parts of Google. Google doodles have been produced to celebrate several noted artists and scientists.

Today, Google announced the winners of the Doodle 4 Google, the second competition where children and students have been invited to work their artistic will upon the Google homepage logo. The national winner is Makenzie Melton from El Dorado Springs, Missouri. She is 9 years old.

On the same website, Google presents the history of doodles (the Google logos), the team of designers behind the doodles and an archive of all their event, holiday, official and fan logos.

Google’s 2010 Christmas doodle has 17 interactive images that approximate the logo’s letters and colors. Read the story about the creation of this interactive artworks : 5 Artists, 250 hours, 6 months.

A tutorial how to program the Christmas 2010 Doodle effect has been published by Martin Angelov on the Tutorialzine website.

~IDENTITÄT – The »Gestalt« of dig­ital identity

A recent project in this area has been done by Jonas Loh and Steffen Fiedler as a bachelor thesis at the Studiengang Interfacedesign of the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam, Germany, with the help of the 3D Lab of the TU-Berlin. The project called ~IDENTITÄT – The »Gestalt« of dig­ital identity eval­uates how dig­ital identity is generated to determine pa­ram­e­ters on which a compa­ra­ble anal­yses of the dig­ital identity is pos­sible. The concept, the process and the results are published at the website www.digital-identities.com. Photos of the whole project are available at the flickr collection. The project was tutored by Prof. Boris Müller.

Le livre publié par Editions Maxima, 2007 (ISBN 284001405X, 9782840014058) comporte 537 pages, des extraits sont visibles sur le site Google : recherche de livres.

Un guide très utile sur le droit d’auteur sur Internet est accessible sur le site de la cité scolaire Pierre Larousse de Toucy dans l’Yonne. Les règles de base à connaître et à respecter lorqu’on utilise un document sur Internet :

• Citer le nom de son auteur et les références de l’oeuvre.
• Respecter l’oeuvre, ne pas déformer la pensée de l’auteur, ne pas modifier l’oeuvre.
• Si l’auteur est vivant ou s’il est décédé depuis moins de 70 ans, il faut demander son
• accord écrit ou celui de ses “ayants droit » (famille, éditeur…).
• Ne pas utiliser l’image d’une personne sans son autorisation.

On peut reproduire librement une œuvre si l’artiste est décédé depuis plus de 70 ans en citant l’auteur et la référence de l’œuvre ; dans le cas contraire il faut demander l’autorisation à l’artiste ou à ses ayants droit. Dans tous les cas il faut obtenir l’autorisation du propriétaire de l’œuvre. On doit toujours respecter l’intégralité de l’œuvre. Pour reproduire une photographie d’une œuvre, il faut également obtenir l’autorisation du photographe ou de l’agence qui le représente.

Une bande dessinée au sujet du droit d’auteur a été publié dans le cadre de l’accord entre l’Institut national pour la défense de la concurrence et la protection de la propriété intellectuelle (INDECOPI) et l’Organisation Mondiale de la Propriété Intellectuelle (OMPI) en 2001.

Book Preview

Marcel Salathé alias Sala is the creator of onethousandpaintings.com, an art project that has considerable success since its conception in 2006. More than 780 paintings have been sold and the project was presented in numerous blogs and in many high impact media publications. Recently a group page was created on Facebook.

Sala is not only a famous artists, but also a biologist (with an ETH Medal for outstanding PhD thesis awarded 2007), a writer, a musician and a talented programmer. He is the author of the html-graph applet. Give it a try and see the tags in your webpage popping up like confetti.

Marcel Salathé’s reflections about the art market resulted in the following actions concerning his paintings :

• remove all content
• add minimum of uniqueness/limit
• led content become metacontent
• build in supply and demand mechanism
• create a price formula to stimulate the early market

On July 10th, 2008, Marcel Salathé was invited by  Google TechTalks to talk about the Onethousandpaintings artwork. The video published on the YouTube googletechtalks channel is shown herafter.

My daughter bought the Onethousandpainting Nr 658 mid 2006. It was the first painting sent to Luxembourg and one of the first work of conceptual art purchased by my daughter who owns a contemporary artgallery in Luxembourg. On August the 2nd, 2006, Luxembourg was welcomed as the24th country to the list of countries where paintings have been purchased on the blog of Marcel Salathé’s website.

 Anthony White is best known for his “Money Series”, a project that he started using the Australian Dollar. The series has now been expanded to British Pounds, US Dollars and Euros, and over five hundred paintings have been sold to over twenty different countries in the past three years. On november 12th, 2007, I received my 130€ painting from the money series of Anthony White. It was the first painting that has been sent to Luxembourg.

The  combined paintings Salathé & White Bond Nr 2, the Onethousand-painting Nr 658 and the Money Series painting 130€ are exhibited at Leslie’s Artgallery, 66-68 rue de Luxembourg, L-6140 Bridel, Luxembourg. The gallery is opened from wednesday to sunday, 15h00 to 19h00, and by appointment.

Ten years ago when Google was in beta stage they used this logo. In the meantime Google designed several hundred different logos.

My favorite design is the logo celebrating Joan Miró’s birthday on April 20th, 2006.

There are different sites on the web featuring google art. I recommend the website Google Logos Collection, with Official Google Logos and Unofficial Google Logos by Google fans, maintained by Vamsi Gangavalli.  He also operate a Search Engine Optimization Forums where SEO and SEM related issues are discussed. The Google Official Logos are Copyright to Google.

Valérie Grancher, a french artist graduated by the Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts de Paris on 1995, focused on Google oil paintings.

He is represented by the Lincart Gallery in San Francisco. In 2004, Valérie Grancher published a limited edition of 250 numbered copies of his book “Web Drawings” at Onestar Press.

A nice blog about google issues (Googlified : Everything Google) is run by Haochi Chen and a few friends he met on the Net.
